What Makes September Fairs Notable for Collectors?

Fresh Inventory: Dealers spend the summer acquiring material, making September fairs prime hunting ground for newly surfaced acquisitions.

Ephemera Focus: Early autumn fairs frequently feature a strong mix of historical documents, broadsides, prints, and trade cards alongside traditional bound volumes.

Paving the Way for Late Fall: These events serve as the industry kickoff leading into the major late-autumn flagship shows, such as the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair in November.

What Makes September Fairs Notable for Dealers?

In two words it’s fresh inventory. Most shows permit trading before the public show opens. Some dealers focus on buying and others on selling. Some are collectors and are primarily focused on buying for themselves.

As well, collectible paper is a people business. Because most book shops have closed, shows have become THE public way dealers, collectors and institutions interact.

Major International Fairs

York National Book Fair (York, UK): Held at the York Racecourse, this is widely recognized as the largest antiquarian and rare book fair in the UK (and one of the biggest in Europe). Hundreds of dealers showcase everything from 15th-century incunabula and fine bindings to modern first editions, maps, and ephemera. It is often paired with the annual York Antiquarian Book Seminar. 

Rare Book Week Berlin / Rare Books Berlin (Berlin, Germany): Coinciding with the international ILAB (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) Congress and Symposium, this event draws major international booksellers to venues like the historic Kronprinzenpalais. It features high-end antiquarian works, manuscripts, prints, and lectures.

Empire State Rare Book Fair (New York, NY): A key early-autumn fair on the East Coast bringing together prominent US and international dealers featuring rare literature, Americana, manuscripts, and fine press work. 

Montreal Antiquarian Book Fair (Montreal, Canada): Organized by members of the ABAC (Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of Canada), this event serves as a major gathering for Canadian and international bibliophiles, specializing in Canadiana, early printing, fine art, and literature.

In addition to major international gatherings, September hosts several specialized regional fairs across the United States: 

ABAA Virtual Book Fair (Autumn Edition): Organized online by the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America, allowing global dealers to unveil new acquisitions digitally to collectors worldwide.

Vermont Antiquarian Book Fair (Rochester, VT): A long-running regional event focusing on New England history, early American children's books, literature, and affordable antiquarian finds.

Rochester Book and Paper Fair (Rochester, NY): Focuses heavily on regional history, vintage photography, historical broadsides, and paper ephemera alongside antiquarian volumes.

Connecticut Gold Coast Book Fair (Weston, CT): A curated gathering of New England booksellers highlighting literary first editions, historic manuscripts, and fine bindings.
