The Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair Returns October 24-25

- by Bruce E. McKinney

Old paper is sooo the future of collecting!

The future of collectible paper will soon be found on the grounds of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair that can still be reached by the Monorail that connects Seattle’s downtown.

How and why?

In the late 1970’s the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair was first organized when regional fairs were quite the new thing. Over the next decade Chicago, Washington, D. C., Philadelphia, Rochester, Tampa-St. Pete and Seattle soon had their own. Today five of them, (absent Washington, D.C.), continue to support the collectible paper field in its ever-evolving form. Among them the Seattle fair continues to be particularly strong.

That brings us to the announcement that the City of Seattle will soon again host The Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair that will begin on October 24th and conclude on the 25th. If you’ve been there before, will it be the same? Yes and no. What was once primarily old books, fresh material in that category will be there while the ever-broadening footprint of collectible paper will be evident too as close to a hundred booths will be displayed.

Said another way, all forms of paper will be on hand and all its communities; dealers, collectors and institutions are expected to be found on both sides of the exhibitor aisles.

As of this date, a few spaces remain available. Whether you are brand spanking new, a grey-haired savant, or anywhere in between, the future of old paper will be made clearer as two thousand or so bibliophiles graze the aisles. Perhaps you have felt that old paper is a settled matter. In truth, it’s on the verge of a revolution as old paper becomes more understandable and valuable.

So, if you’re up to being revolutionary, bring money to buy or bring things to sell or simply browse, listen, and get a sense of the way the wind is blowing.

AND, if you have the yen to have a booth, you’ll be welcomed. For information you can call or email. One of the few remaining booths can be yours. Contact Bill Wolfe at collinsbooks@collinsbooks.com or call (206) 323-3999
