Bookmen on the Montana Frontier: The Koch Collection on Western Exploration and Natural History

The Koch Collection has found its resting place

Recently Stanford University Libraries published a book celebrating a collection that was given to Stanford. It’s titled "Bookmen on the Montana Frontier", The Koch Collection of Western Exploration & Natural History. Its significance is that this material was primarily collected during the later 19th century and was used as a working library. The elder Mr. Koch (1844-1918) was a self-educated man. He was a Danish immigrant, frontier surveyor, chronicler, and bibliophile who played a notable role in the early history of the Montana Territory.

Koch immigrated to the United States in the late 1860s and made his way to the rough-and-tumble American West. He lived a varied life along the Missouri River and across the Montana frontier, working as a woodcutter, trader, surveyor, and clerk during a formative era of early Western settlement.

In Montana, he transitioned from a rugged frontiersman into one of Montana's most prominent early civic leaders, educational founders, and business figures.

There he built his library. While he wasn’t averse to buying a collectible copy, he mainly acquired copies he could read. Certainly, he and his family early on viewed his frontier library a meaningful accomplishment.

Over time such libraries are dispersed, divided between heirs, sold or given to libraries. Rather a significant portion of that library was kept together by his son, Elers Christian Koch at his home in Missoula, Montana. As luck would have it, Peter Rutledge Koch who would have a lifelong interest in it, would make it his mission to save and secure it.

This is why the Koch collection would be gifted and welcomed by Stanford. It would not be because the material was exceptionally rare. Rather it was because the Koch family’s working library had become rare evidence of how an intellectual focus in the 19th century could be turned into a working library, in this case focusing on the emerging American west.

As a teaching and learning tool, it will find a place in the study of bibliophilia.

That the Koch family and Stanford University, in time reached an understanding about their increasingly rare working library that had been built book by book in the emerging old west, would be saved and secured within a collecting institution’s archives is a rare success. In fact, that success is quite possibly rarer than the material itself. That Stanford’s storied archives would be the permanent home for it are the candles on the cake.

Best wishes all around.

For those interested in this collection, Stanford has published a beautiful in volume in full color, enumerating and describing each volume. They have published 500 copies and are themselves collectible upon issue.
