In Loving Memory of Harry Houdini (1874–1926)

On October 31, 1926—one hundred years ago this Halloween—the world lost its greatest escape artist. While most people spend Halloween trying to summon ghosts, Harry Houdini spent a lifetime proving that most of them were just optical illusions, clever stagecraft, or people hiding behind curtains with glowing paint.

Houdini made a career out of breaking free from what should have been impossible: locked handcuffs, sealed milk cans, straightjackets while dangling upside down over city streets, and river ice. He was a master of physical endurance, dramatic flair, and public relations—always leaving audiences breathless and skeptics utterly baffled.

Yet, despite his flair for the supernatural aesthetic, Houdini was famously a rigorous skeptic. In his later years, he waged a relentless war against fraudulent spiritualists and fake mediums, insisting that if anyone was going to deceive the public with smoke and mirrors, they had better be an honest magician doing it on stage.

Before he died, Houdini made a pact with his beloved wife, Bess: if it were humanly (or spiritually) possible to escape the afterlife and return to the living, he would do it. He even gave her a secret coded phrase—"Rosabelle, believe"—so she would know it was really him. For ten years after his death, Bess held a Halloween séance to see if Harry could pull off the ultimate escape.

After a decade of silent candles and unbroken quiet, she famously extinguished the lamp, declaring, "Ten years is long enough to wait for any man."

So, as Halloween approaches on the 31st marking his centennial, let us raise a glass (or a pair of unlocked handcuffs) to the legend himself. Harry Houdini may not have picked the lock on the great beyond, but he spent his life proving that no barrier on Earth could hold a person with enough courage, skill, and sheer force of will.

Rest in peace, Harry. And if you’re planning on slipping out this Halloween... we're still watching.
