Source Title The Pierre S. duPont III Collection of Navigation, Voyages, Cartography and Literature of the Sea
Description This collection of 255 lots, many of which contain multiple volumes, is a very important sale in the travel and voyages category. Many of these items have not come to auction since. At the time (1991), the prices were considered to be high, but many have in time come to look like a bargain. DuPont was a descendant of the famed DuPont family which founded the chemical company that bears their name. Pierre III was not a particularly public individual though his son went on to be a Delaware Governor and one-time presidential candidate. However, Pierre III did achieve great recognition for his spectacular collection of books in the field of voyages and navigation.
