Description Venator and Hanstein's predecessor opened for business in 1946. The idea was to establish a book auction in the historical publishing city of Cologne in Germany. For the first five years it was known as Ringbuchhandlung August Nethe Co. In 1951, with the company being managed by Rolf Venator, the name became Nethe and Venator, and in 1953 Venator KG. Professor Henrik R. Hanstein joined the firm in 1984.

Venator and Hanstein has been conducting book and print auctions ever since its founding. Among the items regularly offered are books, manuscripts, autographs, prints, drawings, views and maps.
