Source Title
Description Butterfield's was founded in San Francisco in 1865 by former Sheriff William Butterfield. It started out primarily by auctioning surplus goods, but as California flourished over the years, succeeding generations of Butterfields expanded the items offered to fine art, furniture, and books. In 2002, Butterfield's was purchased by Bonham's, the major English auction house. Auction results for its successor firm, known as "Bonham's and Butterfield's" in the U.S., are found listed in this database under "Bonham's."
